At the end of the day, any lighting system comprises three things:
- lighting hardware – the luminaire
- lighting control
- relationship with daylight
Luminaires (light fixtures) need to deliver the appropriate kind of light, in sufficient quantity and in an appropriate pattern.
We’re trying to mimic natural light, so the LED light source needs to be as close to natural light as possible; ‘circadian lighting’ assumes a 24-hour light pattern. That pattern is not necessarily an exact mimic of the anatural day-night pattern: it may need to be modified to align with human activity.
Daylight provides the best illumination of all. Where it is available, good daylight needs to be incorporated into the overall lighting system design.
