An opportunity not to be missed comes our way – and we’d be foolish not to take advantage!
Our good friend Deborah Burnett ( see podcast on The Light Review discussing NIR and human health ) is visiting the UK in a couple of months time, along with her partner James Benya. The very idea that we could ignore two of the giants of the international lighting research and design community never crossed our mind; especially after Deborah pre-empted the conversation by offering us one day of their valuable time while they’re here.
What that means is that we have organised a one-day symposium, based on Deborah’s recent paper ‘Beyond Lighting – The Body Speaks‘. It takes place in London at the offices of BDP on Tuesday 15th October 2024. Here’s the link to the Eventbrite registration.

The symposium starts at 3pm with a session that focuses on the work of lighting specifiers and the importance of ensuring that lighting specifications take account of the latest research in lighting for health and wellbeing. We’ve learned so much more about the Circadian issue that we’ve started to refer to Circadian-appropriate lighting as CIRCADIAN PLUS; a concept that takes into account the latest research by Oxford University and others.
And – new onto the agenda will be Mitochondrial Infra Red and the impact that LED-sourced lighting is having in diminishing vital environmental IR exposure in our buildings. We’re finding that modern architectural design and modern lighting technology are not necessarily the best thing for our physical health.
.The second session opens up at 6pm when the conversation shifts towards the role that project commissioners have to play in ensuring that best practice is followed. WAs well as Deborah and Jim, we’ll be hearing from leading architects and engineers in the care sector – and we’re looking forward to hearing from their clients as well.
This is a conversation that is already taking place, but project commissioners need to be supported and reinforced in their endeavours by being made aware of this ongoing research. This is what this session is all about.
.We’re hoping to see a good number of lighting design professionals in the room – and will be overjoyed to see them accompanied by their clients from the care sector, in all its wide and varied forms. This is a single conversation that needs supporting from every angle if lighting for health and wellbeing is to become normal practice in building of design and refurbishment.
The symposium is supported by a number of UK-based manufacturers who are playing an active role in developing the evolving specification that is CIRCAIAN PLUS. eight manufacturers will be sharing the space with us, looking forward to sharing their pathway with our audience..
